King County Attempts to Fast Track Homeless Megaplex in Chinatown

More Evidence Last week as #Chinatown International District prepared to protest against @kcexec‘s HOMELESS MEGAPLEX, Dow’s representative essentially asked @KCCouncil permission to FAST TRACK project by doing away with COMPETITIVE bidding process on construction. Outrage Community advocate Matt Chan (@Lofanland) is a former special advisor to @MayorofSeattle. Chan says it’s evident @kcexec is trying to push his HOMELESS MEGAPLEX through without #Chinatown-ID community input. Even some @KCCouncil are now questioning the process. More Protests Tues Sept.13, #Chinatown-ID will confront @KCCouncil as members consider voting on request from @kcexec to fast track HOMELESS MEGAPLEX. They’re demanding answers from @JoeMcDermottWA who sponsored project. Will he show in person? Details. Holding the Line #Chinatown-ID held massive rally to say HOMELESS MEGAPLEX project must Read More ›

Chinatown Pushes Back Against Homeless Megaplex

The Vote @KCCouncil budget committee dealt potential DEATH BLOW to #Chinatown International Dist. May 3 when they approved @kcexec‘s HOMELESS MEGAPLEX a BLOCK away in SODO. What’s STUNNING is only 1 person shared public comment. Activists say very few knew about vote. Listen to the Process Sponsor @JoeMcDermottWA is running point on this project @KCCouncil. #Chinatown activists say he FAILED to advocate on behalf of his Asian American constituents. No mention of CID. He says aspects of this will be ready by “end of the year.” Specs here. Dow’s Homelessness Czar Leo Flor runs Dept of Community+Human services for @kcexec. He’s behind recent surge of homeless hotels and this SODO MEGAPLEX. What’s disappointing for activists is lack of outreach to Read More ›

Behind the Scenes Look at “Crisis in the Woods”

Raw Look My series “HIDDEN CRISIS IN THE WOODS” incited quite a response and conversation. But there’s more. SELECT group of media followed @KCCReaganDunn @kingcosoPIO to experience first hand. Behind the Scenes I just scratched the surface. There are many more homeless people living in these heavily wooded areas and more are headed here. Look at the waterfront property I found! It’s not just unincorporated King Co. It’s also in Seattle and across the region. COVID Restrictions? @MayorofSeattle and @wsdot @GovInslee now removing homeless encampments on public right of ways. But why not in other parts of @KingCountyWA and unincorporated? @KCCReaganDunn says @KCPubHealth has not updated pandemic guidance. Tough Love @KCCReaganDunn new legislation would create interagency task force focusing first Read More ›

The Hidden Crisis in the Woods: Part 2

It’s tee time at Jackson Park golf course, part of Seattle’s vast network of public spaces. But go beyond the greens and onto nearby trails leading into the deep woods. It looks far worse than any bad shot into the rough.  “I had a friend show me up here,” says Champ, who’s homeless.   Surrounded by the cover of lush trees and an abundance space, Champ says he’s lived alone in peace at this encampment for almost three years. However, he says that’s now changing.  “Usually when somebody gets kicked out they go somewhere else — where they’re going they’re going to raise hell in that area cause they’re pissed,” says Champ.  He believes the city and state’s recent crackdown on Read More ›

King County Councilman Reagan Dunn Introduces Pilot Program to Remove Homeless from Woods

Breaking @KCCReaganDunn introducing pilot program forming task force and giving county authority to remove homeless encampments in woods along Green River Rd/unincorporated King County. More details in my investigative series “Hidden Crisis in the Woods” pt. 2 launching today. Right Now Currently, King Co. does not clear homeless encampments on County property and has no procedures in place to do so. This is not a done deal. Entire @KCCouncil needs to vote in coming weeks. @KCCReaganDunn says legislation would only apply to this wooded area. Interagency Task Force It would include @kingcosoPIO, Depart of Community and Health Services, Local Services Roads’ Division, in collaboration with @KCRHA. Responsible for clean up plan involving current and future encampments and connecting homeless with Read More ›
