From the YouTube description:
This documentary was filmed before Gavin Newsom passed the executive order for the removal of homeless encampments in California, which he did right here in Sacramento. This comes a month after a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside in public spaces. With this Gavin Newsom has officially ordered California state agencies to start clearing homeless encampments statewide.
Dregs of the City: Sacramento is a SIX SEVEN short documentary that dives into the troubles that plague the homeless population in Sacramento. This SIX SEVEN documentary puts an emphasis on the new tiny home homeless communities, also known as the pallet homes, and investigates one of the pallet home communities to see what the city is doing right and what it’s doing wrong with the Sacramento homeless crisis. These pallet homes are government-run homeless encampments, which are becoming increasingly popular due to the recent supreme court ruling allowing cities to ban homeless encampments.
Sacramento has the third worst homeless crisis per capita in America, and the second worst crisis per capita in the state of California. The city of Sacramento has seen skyrocketing numbers of homeless people over these last several years, while in very recent years nearby cities like San Francisco have technically seen decreasing numbers in their population. Is there a correlation?
This documentary takes an absurdist dive into homelessness in the aim of drawing out truth through the wildness that is Sacramento. Out of all of the cities we’ve filmed in for our Dregs of the City series, Sacramento was by far the weirdest, but we made a lot of friends along the way, and we hope you enjoy meeting them.
