Political Theater

WA Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal just introduced a bill that allows homeless people to camp on federal land if they have no other options. This was simply political theater and won’t go anywhere. Here’s the real problem for Jayapal.

Washington’s Homelessness Crisis

Despite billions of dollars spent over the years, Washington state has the third largest homeless population in America with more than 31K people living on the streets. That’s likely an undercount. This is all happening under Jayapal’s watch.

Jayapal’s Ideology

Part of the problem is her far-left progressive ideology. Here’s what she recently told the Seattle Times: “Because I don’t think that homelessness is a failure of the individual,” she said. “I think it’s a failure of the system. I think it’s a failure of our policymaking.”

Housing First Has Failed

Like many Democrats, Jayapal has pushed the failed Housing First approach to solve the street crisis. This policy gives taxpayer funded apartments to homeless drug addicts without any requirements to seek treatment. It’s led to devastating consequences.

Trump Admin Kneecaps Housing First

All the latest data shows that America’s homeless crisis is actually being fueled by drug addiction, mental illness, and broken relationships. The Trump administration is aware and responding accordingly at the federal level.

Martin v. Boise

Jayapal’s bill closely resembles the Martin v. Boise decision from 2019, which said it was “cruel and unusual” for cities to fine or arrest homeless people for sleeping outside when they had no other options. Last year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled cities can ban public camping.

Virtue Signaling

At the end of the day, Jaypal knows her proposed law is DOA. Democrats do not have the votes in Congress to get this through. So this was just another virtue signaling session and an opportunity to go after President Trump.
