Taking on the Homeless Industrial Complex Battlefield Addiction and We Heart Seattle made a huge splash this weekend, raising thousands of dollars for sober living beds in the Seattle area. For drug addicts, that means a place to go for treatment and recovery instead of being given more taxpayer-funded meth pipes and fentanyl foil. This is the start of a powerful partnership to take on the homeless industrial complex and confront lies being peddled by the “harm reduction” lobby in America. Discovery Institute was a proud sponsor of this event.

Our friends at We Heart Seattle are doing incredible work transforming lives. The testimonial below features recovering addict Stephen Dowd, who was found living in a tent before We Heart Seattle helped him get into treatment. We Heart Seattle is modeling what actually works to rescue people from homelessness. “Everybody else is focused on getting somebody housed,” says We Heart Seattle’s Tim Emerson. “I’m more focused on getting somebody better and then housed.”

New For the past few years, all eyes have been on Seattle’s homeless drug crisis. But Kent’s street problems are being compounded by the “nomad class.” These are the people who have tapped out from society and are refusing shelter and services. They want to stay in nature and have taken over prime wetlands and greenbelts, building treehouses to evade enforcement in this South King County city. Beautiful streams are now clogged with trash and the environmental cost to clean this up is easily in the millions. New “Housing First” is an utter failure and must be scrapped. The latest data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development proves it. Even the drug addicts say this not an affordable housing issue. In fact some people are now afraid to go into low barrier “permanent support housing” situations because they know drug use and overdose deaths are rampant behind closed doors. Breaking Homeless man Steve Irwin was back in court Wednesday morning after being arrested again at Seattle’s Dr. Jose Rizal Park. He’s accused of violating his no trespass order by building an encampment in the woods. Cops accuse Irwin of destroying the park and says he needs to remain behind bars. Irwin’s public defender blamed the media for blowing this case out of proportion and wanted him released so he could stay with friends. Homeless outreach group We Heart Seattle begged Judge Damon Shadid to order Irwin into mental health treatment. But Judge Shadid said “case law” does not allow him to do that and Irwin has to voluntarily enter treatment on his own. Bail was set at $5,000. Irwin Read More ›

Breaking Tuesday afternoon, Seattle Police arrested Steve Irwin again and led him out of Dr. Jose Rizal Park in handcuffs after he allegedly violated a court order banning him from public parks. Since 2023, this repeat offender has been arrested multiple times and charged for trespassing, stealing an excavator, and damaging park property. But King County activist judges keep lowering bail or releasing him with just a slap on the wrist. This is clearly the epitome of a broken system that is failing Irwin. The Mayhem of Open-Air Drug Use Chasing the truth can be risky. A drug addict assaulted me while I was recording outside a so-called safe consumption site in Vancouver, B.C. Thankfully the cops swooped in and neutralized the threat. We Heart Seattle’s Andrea Suarez and I made it out unscathed. “I Thought I Saw the Worst in Seattle” Vancouver B.C. has the most horrific drug scene I have ever witnessed in North America. Discovery Institute and We Heart Seattle teamed up to learn more about what’s fueling this hell on earth. So-called “safe consumption sites” and non-profits giving away drug supplies like candy have trapped addicts in a vicious cycle. We did not see a single agency intentionally offering detox or treatment to anyone on the streets. This is failed public policy in action. Who Is Listening? “Camping Is Prohibited” Right near the Interbay encampment fire, We Heart Seattle just discovered more tents in the NW Queen Anne Greenbelt. This area connects to the N. Kinnear Park hiking trail. Look at all the used drug needles scattered in the woods. This addiction crisis is out of control.
